Interior Design Institute
THE BRIEF
This was a project I did through the Interior Design Institute.
Our job was to redesign and modernize the entire main floor of this 1950s home to better suit the needs of the family. They are a married couple with 2 pre-teen children; they don’t do a lot of formal entertaining, but love to gather as a family.
Their must-haves:
-
Open plan design to incorporate the dining, kitchen, and living
-
Water closet (or full bathroom, if possible)
-
Laundry
-
Study, or study nook
And the nice-to-haves:
-
Guest bedroom
-
Additional living/games space
-
Mud room/entryway storage
-
Deck at the back
Budget for this main floor renovation learning assignment is unlimited.

THE NEW LAYOUT
-
This house is on the smaller side, with no option to extend the square footage, so every inch needs to be put to good use
-
This new kitchen has a compact footprint, but the pantry under the stairs adds tons of storage, and the island gives extra prep space
-
A round dining table is perfect for games or casual family dining, and can extend when they do want to host
-
The back lounge will have a sleeper sofa and a door that closes, making it perfect for occasional guests or as a teen hangout zone
-
The full bathroom easily doubles as a laundry room with a stackable washer and dryer (enclosed in cabinetry)
-
Included as much from the nice-to-have list as possible while not sacrificing functionality
